The Sologne is peppered with ponds and lakes. When it rains, frogs emerge from everywhere.

Recently we’ve had to make a detour through the woods to drive to Sully-sur-Loire, due to some road works between our B&B, La Danasha, and Viglain.

La Danasha is located in Les Champs (top right, highlighted).
The crazy wild road is highlighted in yellow.

Beyond the initial, and temporary, frustration generated by added travel time (and on a couple of occasions, getting hopelessly lost on those small, uneven roads) it’s turned out to be a pleasure to make that detour daily because it is so seldom used that the wildlife feels very much at ease on it!

And by wildlife I mean a number of animals typically found around here: pheasants (loads of them), deer, musquash (it’s a large rodent) and birds of prey, one of which flew right above my car with a prey in its beak the other day!

Below is a pheasant that walked right in front of my car for about 20 metres, blissfully unaware of the danger. It’s the only creature that was slow enough for me to capture it on a picture…

I’ve made a mental note to come again soon on that road on a bike or on foot, to blend in and enjoy the scenery (and the animal activity!) a bit better.
